Finding the Main Idea
Exercise 4

Read the selection and then write the topic and complete the implied main idea statement.

Another Monday morning greeted me. I dressed, grabbed a doughnut, and headed for my car. I held on to the steering wheel, squeezed my eyes, and headed off to begin the daily commute. I dreamed of a day when I could soar above the sleepy, half-alert drivers that make up America's weary work force. However, that day may be coming sooner than I imagined. According to the news on my car radio, Moller International, a California-based company, has designed the M400 Skycar, a four-passenger vehicle with a cruise speed of 350 miles per hour, and for those running late to work, a top speed of 390 miles per hour. The Skycar, controlled by an onboard computer, will literally transcend the highways and lift me, and drivers like me, above the fray. I will take off and land vertically. Since my Skycar will need an area of 35 feet in diameter to land, I suppose parking lots will have to be redesigned. The Skycar is also equipped with parachutes, but I think the possibility of having to jump might be less traumatic than dealing with angry gun-toting and telephone-talking drivers on the long ride home.
