Purpose and Tone Exercise 2 |
![]() |
Read each selection to determine the purpose and tone the writer conveys.
Many of the Austrian and German immigrants who helped settle America brought with them the art of beer-making. In the 1800s the city of Milwaukee boasted more than twenty brewers of one of America's favorite drinks. At this time Milwaukee had a large German population which could provide the skill and labor to make fine beers. The city also had access to needed water and grains, and it had a cool climate. In 1844 Jacob Best founded the Best Brewery which would later become known as the now famous Pabst Brewing Company. In the southwestern United States, Germans and Austrians also played a role in the rush for gold in the mid-1800s. When some of these miners gave up their quest for gold, they, too, relied on the art of brewing beer. Many breweries were started, but the hot weather and a lack of refrigeration made production difficult. The art of brewing fine beer, however, had made its way to America.
