Purpose and Tone Exercise 3 |
![]() |
Read each selection to determine the purpose and tone the writer conveys.
I am a parent of a college student who lives in a coed dormitory at a large southern university hundreds of miles away from home. I spend hours worrying about her because I hear stories about female students being given drugs at parties, and I read news articles about college students ending their lives tragically because of too much alcohol. Now it seems I have one more worry to add to my list. A recent study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health suggests that more than 300,000 students at America's four-year colleges have guns at school. The study noted that one-third of the gun owners live in college dormitories. These gun owners also seem to drink a lot--quite a lot. The young gun owners are more likely to be males, and most of these gun owners are on Southern campuses. I wish my concerns were about "simple" issues, sleeping through classes or not passing chemistry; however, my concerns are for her life!
