Purpose and Tone Exercise 7 |
![]() |
Read each selection to determine the purpose and tone the writer conveys.
The topic of illiteracy in America has been widely discussed by educators, legislators, and concerned citizens. Some argue that we need more volunteers to teach people to read. Others say that we should focus on phonics; others say we need to test more. Still others blame poor reading on television. Ironically, perhaps, one of the greatest advocates of literacy uses television to promote reading. To combat illiteracy in this country, maybe we simply need more Oprah Winfreys! During Oprah's television show, she discusses books during her Book Club segment to an estimated 15-20 million fans. Using television as a medium by which to discuss books, authors, and ideas, she has sparked "book talk" in living rooms, laundromats, and restaurants across America. She gets people excited about books, and she encourages them to talk about what they are reading. She never tests them on their comprehension; she never forces them to read only "great books" predetermined by teachers or literary critics. Oprah makes people want to read, believe that they can read, and allows them to discuss their ideas without fear of teacher disapproval!
