In the 1960s physicians were allowed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to prescribe Enovid as an oral contraceptive. While the drug had been prescribed previously for menstrual problems, the drug now had a new and liberating purpose. "The pill" literally changed American sexual attitudes. It was convenient, and as a birth control device, it was 98% effective. Women could have sex without worrying about an unplanned pregnancy; however, they had to remember to take the pill regularly, and unfortunately, sometimes there were side effects. It is hoped that soon an even more user-friendly birth control method will be approved by the FDA: a contraceptive patch. This adhesive patch will be worn on the arm or abdomen, for example. It will reduce side effects because it will not pass through the digestive system, and it will produce a steady flow of the drug into the body, creating more emotional and physical consistency. For women who forget to take their pill, the patch will eliminate this problem. With the introduction of the patch, women will have one more option for birth control.
