Exercise 6

Read each passage and then choose the two logical inferences from the choices at the end. Choose if a statement is logical, not logical, or if there is not enough information to make a logical reference. If a statement is chosen as logical, think of two sentences used to support your choice.

1In the small midwestern town of approximately 5,000 people, all the residents were of European descent. 2Their ancestors from Germany and Sweden had settled the area and worked hard to farm the land. 3The Native Americans who had lived there first did not adapt to the farmers' ways, and they had been forced to live on a near-by reservation. 4The Europeans had battled the harsh winters and hot, humid summers and survived. 5They had built churches and a small school with their own hands. 6Everyone was related in some way. 7In their minds, they owned the little world they had created in America.

8The Native Americans ventured to the local store to buy liquor that the residents gladly sold them. 9It was against the law for alcohol to be sold on the reservation. 10The Native American children attended the school on the reservation. 11Everyone in this area seemed to know the rules for behavior.

12Therefore, when an African American family moved to the little town, the residents were upset. 13At first, they said nothing openly, but they were quietly angered that their tightly knit community of people had changed. 14They began talking about the "problem" with each other in small groups at church, at the bar, or at the ball park. 15They ignored the new family. 16Their children pointed to the family when they saw them on the street. 17Eventually, the African American family moved, and the little town was at peace again.
