Richard and Jo Anne Vacca
Pioneers in the field of content literacy, Richard and Jo Anne Vacca have for many years set the standard by which all other texts are measured. Richard T. Vacca, a past president of the International Reading Association, is Professor of Teaching, Leadership, and Curriculum Studies at Kent State University (Ohio) and has published widely in reading instruction and literacy. Jo Anne L. Vacca is Professor and former Chair of the Department of Teaching, Leadership, and Curriculum Studies at Kent State University. The Vaccas met as undergraduate English majors at SUNY Albany (NY) 34 years ago and
have been partners ever since. Jo Anne received her doctorate from Boston University and taught language arts in middle schools in New York and Illinois. Rich earned his doctorate from Syracuse University and taught high school English. He served as President of the International Reading Association in 1996-97.
Rich and Jo Anne have one daughter, Courtney, and a grandson, Simon, and live with two cats and two dogs in Aurora, OH.
The Vaccas are co-authors, with Mary M. Gove, of Reading and Learning to Read, now in its third edition, also available from Longman.
Susan Nelson
Susan Nelson is a former high school English teacher who holds an MFA in Theatre. She is currently a doctoral student in Educational Leadership at Appalachian State University, Boone, N.C. Her research is in the area of curriculum development, the arts in teaching, and technology.
Gary Moorman
Gary Moorman is currently a professor in the Reading and Language Arts Program at Appalachian State University. He has published two books, Designing Reading Programs and Learning to Teach Reading. His articles appear in a variety of professional journals, including Reading Research Quarterly, Review of Research in Education, Journal of Reading, Reading Teacher, Reading Psychology, and Reading Research
and Instruction. His current professional interests focus on technology, literacy, and critical thinking skills.
